For minor infractions the player is warned the first time, subsequent times beyond the first merit a penalty of 5 points; thereafter 10 points and so on (the penalties double onwards). Severe fouls forfeits the right to win the current hand and may be subject to a penalty as well.
Penalties & Errors
Late to Game
- If a player is late by < 10 minutes the player is penalized 10 points; 11-15 minutes the player is penalized 20 points; after 15 minutes the player has forfeited the game.
Erroneous Exposure
- If a player makes a bad exposure or flower replacement, the player forfeits the right win the current hand.
Erroneous Mahjong
- Below minimum score — If a player declares hu but has less than 8 points he forfeits 10 points to each player and forfeits the right to win the current hand.
- False mahjong — If a player declares hu but does not have a valid hand with 14 tiles he forfeits 20 points to each player and forfeits the right to win the current hand.
Change of Heart
- Calling a tile ("empty call")- A player will be warned the first time. The player is penalized 5 points (cumulative) beyond the first instance.
- Reaching to draw a tile – If a player stretches out his hand across the discard floor to draw from the wall he forfeits the right to take the present discard. If a player stretches out his hand to draw but takes the present discard anyway he forfeits the right to win the current hand.
Late Call
- If a player declares pung or kong after the allotted 3 seconds after a discard the player is warned. The player is penalized 5 points (cumulative) beyond the first instance.
- If a player declares chi, pung, or kong and does not pick up the called for discarded tile within the next two players’ turns, he forfeits the right to win (see wrong tile count).
Touching a Tile
- If a tile is touched and not revealed prior to the upper player, discarding the offending player will be warned the first time. The player is penalized 5 points (cumulative) beyond the first instance.
- If a tile is touched and revealed prior to the upper player discarding, the offending player forfeits the right to win the current hand.
Exposed Tiles
- If a player exposes a tile he is obligated to discard on his next turn
- After a valid mahjong — If a player exposes his tiles after another player declares hu he receives a warning.
- After an invalid mahjong — If a player exposes his tiles after another player declares hu with an invalid hand, the offending player forfeits the right to win the current hand and is penalized 30 points to each player. The offending player must also discard each exposed tile until the hand his replaced with fresh tiles.
- If a player knocks over another player’s tile he forfeits 5-60 points to the offended player (umpire’s discretion).
Wrong Tile Count
- A player with more than 13 or fewer than 13 tiles forfeits the right to win the current hand.
