American Mahjong Set

American mahjong sets includes 152 tiles, racks, chips, and dice. Score cards are needed to play the game.

Tiles

Red, Green, and Joker tiles

American mahjong sets will include the necessary tiles needed to play most forms of Asian mahjong. Included are also joker tiles, which are specific to American mahjong. Tiles will usually be numbered. The Red and Green Dragon tiles maybe depicted with a dragon rather than the characters chun and fat.

Racks

Mahjong racks

Racks are used to hold tiles in the hand (of course) and are generally made out of plastic or wood. They also double as level to straighten out the walls. Plastic racks commonly have pegs on the left hand side where chips can be placed. It is customary in American mahjong for all players to have racks. To be easily distinguished, player East often has a different colored rack.

Chips

Chips

Chips are used as method of scoring. Just like dice, any type of chips would suffice. However, some chips are noticeably different from poker chips because of their hollow middle making them look more like coins.

Dealer Indicator

Wind Indicator

Wind indicators are used to display the current wind. It is usually held with East (dealer). In American mahjong it is referred to as a bettor, as a fifth player will use it to place is bet on which player will win. They come in different shapes and sizes. The most common forms are a rotating cylinder or disc, or a cube and its placeholder.

Dice

Mahjong Dice

Dice are used to determine seating and wall breaking. Typical sets come with two to three dice. Any type of six-sided dice would suffice. However, mahjong dice are noticeably smaller than normal board game dice, with number one and four colored red and rounded corners.
